Key episode insights:
How brands can help influencers achieve their goals
For the past two years, Troy has taken part in Austin’s Fittest, a competition to see who is the fittest person in a particular event in the city. And for the past two years, Troy’s taken second place. This year, he’s committed to taking home the gold – but he doesn’t plan on doing it alone.
“So this is really like a huge personal goal, to finally leap and then be the greatest at something and that's where I'm going to utilize the brand to help me out.”
Troy realized that – like many great athletes – finding partners could be the key to overcoming his own limitations. He’s actively seeking brand partnerships to help him get faster, recover better, and make the most of his training.
“I realized to achieve greatness, you never do it yourself... So this was the year where I plan to rely on the help of brands. That's going to be one of the main differentiators this year that I hope will push me over the edge.”
Why influencers should be selective about their partnerships
But Troy won’t just partner with any brand. He looks for partners who complement his lifestyle in and out of competition mode. He’s not just an athlete come gametime – he’s always training, dieting, and improving.
“This is my lifestyle. So this is why it's really important for influencers to be very particular with the brand that you choose to align with. If it doesn't, number one, fit your lifestyle – if it's not you – you'll come off as inauthentic.”
Being inauthentic isn’t in the cards – he’s got too much riding on his athletic performance to afford to work with a brand that doesn’t suit his needs.
The importance of recovery for fitness influencers
As a fitness influencer, Troy is under a lot of pressure to maintain his physique, routines, and workout schedule. He’s balancing a personal life that features a full-time job, a family, and his own personal goals as well. To stay on top of his game, Troy, like many fitness influencers like him, needs to recover. But he has little incentive to stop moving.
“I would say the hardest part for me, honestly, which is going to be shocking, is letting my body recover.”
Taking time off to let his body heal and recover from intense workout sessions is difficult, but luckily, Troy has found brand partners who can help him massage his aching muscles, fuel his nutrition, and get himself back in the gym as quickly as possible.
